Deciding how to code models

Model codes let you organize models numerically and alphabetically. You can organize models into work-related groups by setting up group models. Example:

Within the coding scheme there are three main concerns.

  • How many characters should model codes have? In general, short codes are easier to type. The maximum length is 20 characters.
  • Should model codes be strictly numeric or include other characters? Your decision determines the order of models on the spreadsheet, lists, and reports. Model codes with no more than one decimal point are considered numeric.
  • Should model codes include a decimal point? If so, you must enter the correct number of decimal places when creating the models.
