About Notes
Sage Estimating lets you add notes in a number of places throughout the program. You can use notes to record additional information about an estimate, an item, a spreadsheet group, or an assembly takeoff pass.
Depending on the type of note, you can view, edit, and include notes on reports from various location in Estimating. You can also display an optional Notes column in the estimates grid to view and edit notes used on the estimate cover page.
It is worth noting the distinction between cover page notes and named notes. Both apply to an estimate as a whole, but you maintain them separately and they serve different purposes. A cover page note is a single note associated with the estimate cover page. You can view and edit it from the Estimate Information window. Each estimate can have only one cover page note. You add and edit named notes in the Estimate Notes window, available from the spreadsheet, where you can create multiple notes for the same estimate using separate tabs.
Typically, you use a cover page note for general estimate-level information, while you can use named notes to maintain various categories of information, such as assumptions, inclusions, exclusions, or other project-specific details. You can also select named notes for inclusion on report cover pages.
Cover page notes
In the Estimating Management Console, you can display in the Estimates grid an optional Notes column that displays the note from the estimate cover page. In this column, you can review the cover page note directly from the grid without opening the estimate details.
If the estimate is checked out for editing, you can also edit the note from the grid. Open the note editor from the Notes column using the F2 or Enter key, or type directly in the cell.
If the estimate is not checked out, you can still open the note editor from the Notes cell to view the note in read-only mode.
Notes: At this time, the Notes column in the Estimates grid is for viewing and editing the cover page note only. You cannot sort, filter, or group the Estimates grid by this column.
Estimate notes (named notes)
You enter notes for the estimate as a whole in the Estimate Notes window in the Estimating spreadsheet, where you can:
-
Enter multiple named notes for an estimate.
-
Add and delete note tabs.
-
Rename note tabs.
To open the Estimate Notes window, do one of the following:

Notes for items and spreadsheet groups
You can enter notes for individual items and spreadsheet groups, such as assemblies and phases, in the estimate spreadsheet.
To enter or edit notes, right-click an item or level and then select , or use the Notes tab in the Detail window.
You can also display the Notes column in the estimate spreadsheet to view the beginning of each item or group-level note and edit notes directly in the spreadsheet. If a spreadsheet row contains notes, Sage Estimating displays a paper clip indicator in the row header.
For an item, notes can also include the contact, phone number, and notes for an assigned subcontractor or vendor.
If notes exist for an item or group in the standard database, Sage Estimating displays those notes in the estimate. Any changes you make apply only to the current estimate and do not affect the corresponding record stored in the standard database.
Notes for assembly passes
You can enter notes for individual passes in the Assembly Takeoff window.
After you enter notes for a pass, you can review them by selecting the pass in the Assembly Takeoff window. Sage Estimating displays the notes in a pop-up window.
Including notes on reports
You can include estimate notes on reports by selecting Named Notes in the report's Cover Page Setup window. An asterisk (*) on the cover page indicates that a note is hidden on the report.
You can include item and level notes on estimate reports.
You can include pass notes on the Takeoff Audit report by selecting the Print dimensions option.
