Setting up a bill of materials (BOM)
When to set up a bill of materials
Changing an existing material class
-
Open the Material Class window in one of the following ways:
- On the ribbon, from Codes group on the Data tab, click Bill of Materials.
- In classic view, select Database menu > Bill of Materials.
- From the spreadsheet, right-click a material class, and then click Edit Material Class from the shortcut menu.
- On the spreadsheet, right-click the material class, and then click Edit Material Class on the shortcut menu.
- If you opened the Bill of Materials window from the Data tab (or in classic view, the Database menu), select the material class you want to change, and then click [Edit].
-
Make changes as needed.
The source option indicates where the material class showing in the window is stored. Changes you make to a standard database material class do not affect the estimate. Likewise, changes you make to an estimate material class do not affect the standard database.
-
To change the material class name, click [Rename], and then enter the new name in the Material class field.
For more information, click on the title bar of the window, and then click a field or button.
-
To add a new Address Book entry for a vendor or subcontractor, in the Default sub/vendor box, type the name of the new vendor, and then press [Enter]. At the message asking if you want to add the name to the Address Book, click [Yes], and then add the information for the new vendor in the Company Edit dialog box.
Note: Be sure to save the address record before closing the Company Edit dialog box.
-
- When you finish changing the material class, click [OK] to save it.
- Change other material classes in the same manner.
- You can click to choose from a list of existing material classes, or scroll through the material classes using [<<] and [>>].
- If you opened the material class window from the spreadsheet, you can use Source to change material classes in either the standard database or the estimate.
- When you finish, click [Close].
