Before you start
(optional) Set a location, alternate, and work breakdown structure (WBS) for the assemblies you are going to take off using the Default Takeoff Values pane, opened in one of the following ways:
- On the ribbon, from the Takeoff group on the Takeoff tab, click Default Values.
- In classic view, click View menu > Item Takeoff Settings.
To perform assembly takeoff:

On the ribbon, from the Takeoff group on the Takeoff tab, click Assembly.
-
In classic view, click Takeoff > Assembly Takeoff, or click on the toolbar.
-
-
Select an assembly and take it off. (For more information, see Choosing an assembly for takeoff.)
If you use formulas in your assemblies, Sage Estimating (SQL) displays the variables (dimensions and specs) for the assembly in the variable pane.
-
(optional) Change the assembly description in the variable pane.
For more information, see Changing the assembly description in the variable pane.
-
Enter or calculate a takeoff quantity for the item.
For more information, see Specifying takeoff quantities for items in an assembly.
To calculate quantities, you can:
-
Use formulas.
For more information, see Using formulas to calculate item takeoff quantities.
-
Use the calculator.
For more information, see Using the calculator to calculate the takeoff quantity for an item.
To customize a variable for use in this assembly only, set up an assembly-specific variable. (For more information, see Setting up an assembly-specific variable.)
-
-
(optional) Enter another pass.
For more information, see Adding a pass.
- Review the items in the takeoff grid. If necessary, you can:
Change an item description.
